Mark Hamill Regrets Voicing Concerns on ‘The Last Jedi’ Publicly
To be a fan of art, in any form, it’s critical to understand that there will always be those who see things differently. Nothing great was ever made without criticism. Celebrities in the entertainment industry know this better than many, especially after social media made it so easy to voice strong opinions with a few clicks on a keyboard.
It’s not always fans that voice criticism or concern, however, and Mark Hamill spoke out about one of his own public statements on Tuesday.
“I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public. Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private. All I wanted was to make [a] good movie. I got more than that — [writer-director Rian Johnson] made an all-time GREAT one! #HumbledHamill.”
Hamill refers to his statement about Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi not being the same Skywalker he played in the 70s. He elaborated by saying that Luke’s defeated mentality at the beginning of the film was fundamentally different than what George Lucas built him to be. However, this is Rian Johnson’s story to tell now and he had to assume Luke in whatever mindset he was written to serve this story justice.
That being said, he still wasn’t sure about the character. Of course, those interviews happened before the film was released. After seeing the film in its entirety and seeing why Johnson’s story needed to be told with this Line Skywalker, Hamill tweeted his regrets and called himself ‘Humble Hamill.’
We can all say we’ve been there before, and seeing Hamill come to think of The Last Jedi as a great film is all long time Star Wars fans could have hoped for.
