Throwback Thursday: A Look Back at the Career of Freddie Highmore

Happy Throwback Thursday, everyone!  In honor of the captivating performance he delivered on Monday night’s winter finale episode of ABC’s The Good Doctor, we are devoting today to taking a look back at the career of series star Freddie Highmore.

On The Good Doctor, Highmore plays the role of Dr. Shaun Murphy, a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome and he is phenomenal in this role.  While watching the latest episode on Monday night, a discussion came up about Highmore’s career and it was hard to believe this incredibly talented and gifted actor was the same little kid from the 2004 film Finding Neverland.  This little guy, shown in the gif below, broke my heart with this very line.  Those eyes!  Such emotion!  Such a cute little kid!

His performance in this role captivated his costars.  Kate Winslet described Highmore as, “simply the best young actor,” she had ever seen while Johnny Depp was so taken by his performance that he advocated for Highmore to join the cast of Tim Burton’s 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Highmore ended up landing the role of  Charlie in the film where his performance of the classic character, once again, captured hearts.

Highmore won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer two years in a row for his roles in Finding Neverland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and continued acting in several successful films.  Most notably, he eventually took on the lead role in 2007’s August Rush starring opposite Robin Williams and also starred opposite himself in 2008 film The Spiderwick Chronicles.

From 2013 to 2017, he starred in the role that perhaps he’s best known for – playing Norman Bates on the A&E hit television series Bates Motel.  The role earned him a People’s Choice Award for Best Actor.  Additionally, during his time on Bates Motel, Highmore stepped behind the camera where he actually wrote three episodes for the series and made his directorial debut!
