‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ Movie Gets a 2019 Release Date

Last month, it was announced that the classic Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark? was being reworked as a film adaptation.  The film is moving forward at Paramount Players with IT writer Gary Dauberman penning the script and now, it has an official release date.  On Wednesday, the studio announced the film will be released on October 11, 2019.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? first premiered on Nickelodeon in 1992 as part of SNICK (a portion of programming on Nickelodeon which was geared towards older children and teenagers) and ran until 1996.  The series was rebooted in 1999 with new writers and showrunners but only lasted one season.  Originally created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, the series followed a group of kids/teenagers known as the Midnight Society.  The group would swap scary stories and tales of urban legends but updated with a modern twist.

Paramount Players is a brand new division at Paramount Pictures which centers around the development of programming for younger audiences.  The division draws upon the resources of Viacom brands such as Nickelodeon.  Paramount Players is also working on a live-action Dora the Explorer film with Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? will be released on October 11, 2019.  Are you excited for a film adaptation of the Nickelodeon series?  Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
