Spoiler Warning: The following contains mild spoilers from both The Walking Dead. Please don’t read unless you have seen the latest episode Time For After.
Fans of The Walking Dead aren’t exactly happy with Eugene Porter at the moment. In the last episode of the series, pretty much any hopes of Eugene working as a double agent for Rick’s group were shattered as he unequivocally professed his allegiance to Negan and the Saviors. The episode featured a brilliant performance by Josh McDermitt who brought a whole new depth and level to the Eugene character.
Perhaps hinting at Eugene’s days being numbered now that he’s officially double crossed Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln), McDermitt planned out how he would want Eugene to die (if he dies) on The Walking Dead and his idea is all about Rick getting his revenge! In McDermitt’s weekly column at Entertainment Weekly, he wrote the following:
“Rick battled it out with the Garbage Pail Kids, Heapsters, Trash People, etc. in another epic walker fight. I don’t know that there is anyone more fun to watch do a physically intense fight scene than Andrew Lincoln. I told him and Greg Nicotero (resident badass) that IF Eugene were to die, I want to be choked out by Rick. Most actors have a “thing” — a look they can shoot to the camera, and that’s how they make their money throughout their career. For instance, Jack Nicholson flashes his smile and they hand him a giant bag of money. I think Andrew Lincoln’s “thing” is choking people in a scene. It’s so intense you think he’s really trying to choke the guy. And maybe that’s the secret? I don’t know.”
We guess if you’ve got to go on The Walking Dead, the way to do it would be at the hands of Rick Grimes. Personally, we’re still holding out a tiny speck of hope that Eugene will come to his senses and rejoin Rick’s group.
