Even though it already has a 2018 release date, there are still a lot of unknowns about the upcoming Goosebumps sequel, including the actual plot. Sony has just brought on The Goldberg’s writer Rob Lieber to pen the sequel’s script but as of now Jack Black’s character of R.L. Stine is not in it.
Sony currently doesn’t have any deal or contract to bring Black back so it seems fairly certain at the moment that those who loved the first film should start preparing for something entirely different in its sequel.
Black played Goosebumps’ real-life author R.L. Stone whose books have the power to come to life sending his imaginary demons free to wreak havoc on the town of Madison, Delaware. In addition to Black the film also starred 13 Reasons Why‘s Dylan Minette, The Office‘s Amy Ryan, Jillian Bell, Odeya Rush and Ryan Lee.
2015’s Goosebumps actually did fairly well, grossing over $80 million in the US and over $150 million worldwide and currently has a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was praised for being spooky yet kid-friendly, fun and full of good humor. The success of the first Goosebumps warranted the studio to approve a sequel but also showed that Stine’s fans would be willing to pay to see his works come to life.
FOX is currently developing a trilogy based on Stine’s Fear Street series, which “takes place in the fictional city of Shadyside, Ohio, and features average teenagers, who are elders to the Ghosts of Fear Street preteens, who encounter malignant, sometimes paranormal, adversaries.”
Would you want to see Black return for Goosebumps 2? Either way, the film is hitting theaters September 21, 2018, so Sony better figure things out quick.
