Bette Midler Is Not Here For the ‘Hocus Pocus’ Remake

Many Halloween lovers would probably go on record saying that Hocus Pocus is a cinematic treasure that should forever remain untouched.

However, Disney Channel does not agree as they have plans to remake the holiday staple into a TV movie. While that may excite some Hocus Pocus fans who want to see their favorite characters and songs reimagined, chances are the news is a little irritating and worrisome to most. One person who is most certainly not on board is Better Midler, who played the lead witch of the Sanderson sisters Winifred.

Midler recently attended the New York Restoration Project’s Hulaween party and spoke briefly with PEOPLE to express her feelings on the beloved film’s upcoming reboot.

“I know it’s cheap. It’s going to be cheap!”

Winifred Sanderson still is iconic and was played absolutely flawlessly by Midler and the thought of anyone else taking on that role is almost impossible to imagine and Midler agrees.

“I’m not sure what they’re going to do with my character. My character is very, very broad and I don’t know who they’re going to find to play that.”

The original 1993 film was directed by High School Musical legend Kenny Ortega, but he will not be involved with the new project despite bringing huge successes to the Disney Channel such as The Descendants in the past. The remake will actually be written by Scarlett Lacey with original producer David Kirschner signed on to return.

Some people are hoping that some of the film’s original cast will return to reprise their roles or make a cameo, and while that may be a possibility, don’t expect to see Midler donning her famous teeth and cape.

 “No, no, no!” she quickly replied when asked if she would ever consider appearing in the film.
