Fan Fest ’31 Days of Slashers’: Character Spotlight – ‘Sam’ (Trick R’ Treat)

Happy October, my fellow geeklings! Now that October has finally stumbled upon us, we can officially begin our haunting season. For the month of October, we will be doing ’31 Days of Slashers’, which will feature facts, spotlights and even some interviews from some of our favorite iconic horror villains.

Are you ready for Halloween?! We sure are!

Today we will be covering Character Spotlight – Sam from Trick R’ Treat!

While children may take pride and joy in donning their newest Halloween costume, running up to a door and happily saying ‘trick or treat’, my mind goes somewhere else. I automatically think about the movie Trick R’ Treat, and the film’s main antagonist, Sam.

He may appear as a seemingly innocent masked trick-or-treater, but Sam is anything but that! In fact, he is a demonic pumpkin-like creature who acts as the enforcer for the rules, customs and traditions of Halloween. Sam was created by Michael Doughtery, who sketched him out during his animation classes at NYU. Sam’s creation was to, ideally, give the holiday of Halloween an iconic character. I mean… Christmas has Santa and Easter has the Easter Bunny, right?

Sam’s name originates from Samhain, the origins of Halloween itself. His attire consists of an orange footie onesie, and a burlap sack with buttons for eyes. Sam also possesses the characteristics of a child, appearing to love chocolate and enjoy the holiday cheer. Cute, right? Don’t let his tiny appearance fool you, he is actually quite demonic. I mean, he can scale walls and influence supernatural events to occur, after-all. He also carries around a sack, to which the contents are unknown. (We seriously doubt that it is candy).

Essentially, Sam visits one town a year on Halloween to enforce the rules of the holiday and punish those who ignore and defy them. In other words, your candy jars better be full for trick-or-treaters and you should absolutely keep that jack o’lantern burning until midnight. Like all enforcers do, Sam ensures that those who break tradition (or the rules) are punished. Also, his methods are typically very violent… don’t let his tiny size fool you.

So, make sure that your candy bowls are full and you are donning your very best costume. You never know when Sam may make an appearance!

Pssst… and if he does, chocolate usually works as a peace offering!
