‘The Walking Dead’ Producer Defends the Show’s Violence

If you follow The Walking Dead at all, you know that the zombie series is full of violence and gore. Unfortunately, fans thought that season 7 pushed that boundary just a little too far. Specifically with the season opener, when both Abraham and Glenn died at the hands of Lucile.

Gale Anne Hurd, executive producer for the TWD, responded to all of this criticism by defending the violence and gore, saying that it honors the original story.

“Look, this is the thing, this is a show that comes from a comic book. The only thing that we changed up in that episode is that two died instead of one. Issue #100 of the comic book was incredibly violent.”

Hurd also came forward to say that they wanted to go back to following the comics as close as possible and that this moment (Glenn’s and Abraham’s deaths ) set up the emotional foundation leading up to the ‘All Out War’ plot line.

“For people who are fans of the comic book … We’ve got to remember, without them, we wouldn’t be making the show. It’s important to embrace that fandom. There are shots that are directly, once again, panels from the comic book. But, that didn’t mean that the show, from that point on, maintained that level. It was setting up this character, it was an homage to the comic book, and it set us on course for an all-out war for this season.”

Despite these reasons, the violence was still too much for some fans to handle and many continue to bash the show while others refuse to keep watching.

This really is a show about people and how the sudden change in elements, changes them. We get to see how they handle this new world. We’ve seen the best come out of this apocalypse, with Glenn and Maggie, and we need to be prepared to see the worst as well.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 22.
