Move over Archie Andrews, ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ is Heading to The CW

Something ‘witchy’ this way comes. On the heels of the super successful Riverdale, The CW is hoping to follow in Archie and Co.’s footsteps with a brand new spinoff about Sabrina the Teenage Witch to be called The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

According to The CW, the show “reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

While many people know Sabrina from the Melissa Joan Hart sitcom that aired on ABC from 1996-2003, old-school fans know that she was originally a character in the Archie comics. Many thought that Sabrina would appear on Riverdale as Jason Blossom had traveled to Greendale (Sabrina’s hometown) prior to his murder, but it appears they may be skipping that all together in lieu of her own show.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic book was created by Archie writer and Riverdale EP Robert Aguirre-Sacasa. Sacasa will also write and executive produce The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina alongside CW juggernaut Greg Berlanti,  Sarah Schechter, Jon Goldwater, and Lee Toland Krieger. The CW is hoping to get Sabrina in the 2018-2019 season as a companion series to Riverdale.

If there is one thing The CW does well it’s dark drama and teen drama, so the show should be in good hands at the network. What are your thoughts on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina?
