John Barrowman Weighs in on the ‘Doctor Who’ 13th Doctor Controversy – “I think it’s awesome that she’s going to be a girl!”

Heroes and Villains Fan Fest New Jersey officially kicked off on Saturday and, shortly after, fan favorite John Barrowman took to the stage for his panel, John Barrowman Unleashed.

During the fan question and answer session, one young fan asked Barrowman for his opinion on the 13th Doctor in the Dr. Who franchise.  Earlier this summer, it was revealed that the new Doctor would be a woman for the first time ever in the history of the series.  Jodie Whittaker will be taking over the keys to the Tardis in the next season.  The announcement drew controversy and criticism from some fans, however, in Barrowman’s eyes, it’s about damn time that a woman took the reigns. Barrowman responded to the question by saying, all opinions are valid and that he would be sharing his personal insight.  He said:

“It’s a bit about time that we had a girl doctor.  I know some of you will disagree with me and that’s ok. but the fact of the matter is that Doctor Who was born in an age of misogyny during when men ruled television and also they were deciding what people watched on television.  As time changed and the doctors changed, there’s nothing in the rule book of the Time Lords that says he has to be a man.  I’ve read the Gallifreyan dictionary and I know it’s not in there.  It’s just about everybody getting ready to accept this new Doctor, number 13.”

Barrowman continued by saying, it’s the spirit of the Doctor Who series that is most important. Fans who watch the show do so for the story and the magical journey which they embark on within every episode.  Barrowman continued:

“The thing about Doctor Who is, no matter who the Doctor is, we go on board the Tardis for the journey.  And whoever is in that Tardis, whether it be Sarah Jane Smith, Captain Jack Harkness, a Donna or a Rose Tyler or a Doctor 9, 10, 11, or 12.  We go on there for the story and the journey because it’s the story that gets political not the Doctor themselves.  I think it’s awesome that she’s going to be a girl and I think it’s great that she’s good looking and I would love for Captain Jack to meet the Doctor.”
