Outlander Preview: 5 Questions We Need Answers To In “Surrender” (But Probably Won’t Get)

Outlander’s season 3 premiere was well worth the 14-month (14 MONTH!) wait since the season 2 finale, but it left us with a lot of questions. For this week’s episode preview, we’re looking at 5 of the most pressing questions to which viewers are going to need answers. Knowing Outlander, the answers won’t be given as early as the second episode of the season, but hey, we can hope, right?

1. What was Murtagh’s fate? Jamie’s best friend was only seen once in Episode 301 when he pulled Jamie aside and told him that all the Lallybroch men had been sent home. Viewers will remember Jamie demanding that of Murtagh in the season 2 finale after he realized the Battle of Culloden would not be avoided. Ever the good Laird, Jamie was not willing to send his men into an unwinnable fight. After the smoke of the battle had cleared, Murtagh was nowhere to be seen. Is he waiting back at Lallybroch as Jamie asked, or will it be his name on one of the thousands of remembrance stones dotting the Scottish moor?

2. Did Frank ever finish his letter? After his and Claire’s fight, Frank sat down to write a letter to Reverend Wakefield back in Scotland. From what viewers saw in the season premiere, Frank wanted to know more about the man his wife loved and left behind. His writing was interrupted by the arrival of Brianna, however. Now that the baby is here, will Frank feel the need to finish his letter and send it? And if so, what does Frank eventually find out about Jamie Fraser?

3. Does Brianna’s arrival really change anything? Speaking of Claire and Jamie’s daughter, we have to wonder if Frank meant what he said at Claire’s bedside. He promised her that Brianna’s birth was a new start for all of them. Once the baby bliss wears off, will it truly be happily ever after? Or will the ghost of Jamie come back to haunt them all?

4. How is Jamie healing from his injuries? Speaking of the ghost of James Fraser (see how we segued that?), we have to wonder how he’s faring back at Lallybroch. Captain Grey pardoned Jamie from death as repayment of his brother’s honor debt. It’s well-established that Jamie is a very bad patient (those poor monks in season 1), and now he doesn’t even have Claire to keep him placated. He’s also never been injured to this extent before. Will he be able to submit to his sister Jenny’s nursing? And will anyone be able to treat the unseen emotional trauma of what he’s seen?

5. Does Claire ever take an ashtray to the side of the Dean’s head? Ok, this is one that we’re probably never going to get an answer to, but you have to admit- it’s the scene we all want to see. Frank’s boss at the university is the worst kind of 1940’s man- full of chauvinistic confidence in a woman’s place in society and unwilling to hear anything different. As we’ve seen over the last two seasons, that kind of attitude only spurs Claire on in her quest for independence and equal treatment. We’ve also seen it turn into rage and ashtray-hurling. Frank half-jokingly cautioned Claire against throwing an ashtray at her churlish doctor during delivery. Chances are he’d do the same if it was the Dean in Claire’s crosshairs, but he may not be able to stop Claire from throwing a metaphorical ashtray or two.
