One of our all time favorite movies, Sister Act, had a special reunion on The View on this Thursday’s show. The get-together marked the 25th Anniversary of the film and fans got some wonderful treats.
The special episode started out with an interview of cast members, Whoopi Goldberg (Deloris Van Cartier/Mary Clarence), Kathy Najimy (Mary Patrick), Wendy Makkena (Mary Robert), and the film’s music supervisor Marc Shaiman. Maggy Smith (Mother Superior) wasn’t able to join in person but taped a sweet video message for everyone saying, “I send you lots of love, and I wish I was with you.”
During the interview Najimy how it was her opera voice that got her the role and how Makkena was unsure about the request to sing a girl group song that she hired back up singers. Unlike the other two actresses, Goldberg didn’t plan on doing any singing on the film. As we know, that didn’t happen. Interestingly enough, her role was originally slated for Bette Midler who was unable to do it. It is true how some things happen for a reason!
The interview also had some hilarious moments especially when Najimy and Makkena told the audience about the prank they played on their hotel’s room service staff. They ordered food and right before it arrived, Najimy put porn on the TV and had Makkena stationed as if she was intently watching. When room service came into the room, the young hotel staff witnessed two ‘nuns’ watching porn. Hilarious! Check out Najimy and Makkena telling their story below!
A pleasant surprise was the appearance of Harvey Keitel (Vince LaRocca), who initially fooled Goldberg by telling her he couldn’t make the event. He also presented Goldberg with a sweet gift that was a throwback to the movie – her very own purple fur coat with her name embroidered on the inside lining. Keitel took a moment to compliment Goldberg’s way of handling one of his favorite scenes, where she was forced to substitute a line with “Bless you” instead of what she wanted to say.
Goldberg, Najimy, and Makkena joined some of the remaining cast members; Sherri Izzard, Darlene Koldenhoven, Beth Fowler, Andrea Robinson, and Prudence Holmes for a live performance of “I Will Follow Him.” We love their tribute! It’s the perfect way to celebrate a classic movie. Watch their performance below and try not to belt out the lyrics along with them!
