There’s no doubt that the highly anticipated trailer for the eighth season of The Walking Dead whet our appetites for the new season as always, but there was one scene that caused us to have a major freakout. You know which one we mean: Old Man Rick. Immediately after the trailer aired at San Diego Comic Con this past July, fans were quick to speculate that the scene was taking us back to the pilot and that Rick was actually waking from his coma. However, Scott M. Gimple denied that theory on The Walking Dead season 8 preview special this past Sunday leading fans to conclude that there will be indeed be a time jump two years after the war with Negan like in the comics.
The man himself, Andrew Lincoln, recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the scene, saying he was “shocked and kind of excited by it” but played coy as to whether or not the scene confirmed a time jump this season. “I mean, it’s a gray Rick. It’s an older Rick. So by virtue of the fact that you see, that means that it’s in the future.”
“My instinct was, what a great storytelling device. That was my instinct. I thought it was very interesting, and also gives us an opportunity to do something a little ahead of the game, which I think is very, very neat,” he continued. Fortunately, we may not have to wait very long to find out what the Old Man Rick scene means as Andrew possibly confirmed that “It will be become somewhat clearer after the October premiere,” before adding, “Then again, it may not be. It maybe is still is somewhat opaque. I think that that’s possibly all I can say on the matter.”
The Walking Dead returns Sunday October 22nd.
What do you think? Will the Old Man Rick time jump actually happen or could it be another dream sequence?
