Selena Gomez on the Journey to Finding Her True Self

Selena Gomez is a celebrity that inspires her fans in many ways, but the most important one has to be the way she is open about her struggles. From dealing with lupus to her mental health struggles, she tries to be a person who her fans can not only look up to, but learn from.

Selena has been in an incredible place recently, and she shared a little bit of that recently in an interview with The Business of Fashion, she gave some insight into her own healing process.

One piece of advice was to ask questions to people that you genuinely respect.

Ask somebody you respect. I asked teachers, coaches, managers, people that I respected because of the way they’ve lived their life. I asked them, ‘How did you get to this place? What were you like when you were 25? What were the things that you were thinking about?’ And then from there, being with like-minded people. You are who you surround yourself with — 100 percent. If you’re around people who think that stuff is dumb, that think it’s ridiculous — ‘You’re crazy! You’re fine!’ — but you don’t feel that way, then maybe it’s time to reevaluate that.’

Gomez went on to say that sometimes, indulging in negativity becomes a habit. Not one that you set out to begin, but one that happens before you realize it. You seek out negativity almost because it’s comfortable and you have to make a conscious effort to rewire your thought process.

She went on to say that having good people in your circle is just as important. You can’t grow and become who you want to be if you’ve got people around who aren’t on the same page. You also have to make sure you have time and space to put yourself first, it’s not selfish, it’s human.

You have to figure out the people that are in your circle. I feel like I know everybody but have no friends. I have like three good friends that I can tell everything to, but I know everyone. I go anywhere and I’m like, ‘Hey guys, how’s it going?’ And it feels great to be connected to people, but having boundaries is so important. You have to have those few people that respect you, want the best for you and you want the best for them. It sounds cheesy, but it’s hard.’

Gomez grew up in the public eye, and whether or not it was her desire, the world knew what was going on – or at least – they thought they did. There were a number of times where she wanted to make everyone so happy that she was crushed under the weight of it all. Being honest and open about that, with the people who respect her so much, is awesome.

I think it’s safe to say that all of you know my life whether I like it or not. I had to stop because I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.
