George Clooney Says There are some ‘Suburbicon’ Misconceptions

Just weeks ago, the first trailer for George Clooney’s Suburbicon dropped and murder was highlighted in the picture perfect town with picture perfect families. So much so that it seemed like we should have seen it coming.

Nothing can be that idyllic.

The trailer was notably dark but some viewers found a sense of dark humor in the trailer as well and director George Clooney says there are some serious misconceptions about painting the film as a ‘black comedy’.

There’s some misconceptions. They keep calling it a ‘comedy’ and you’d be hard-pressed to find a lot of funny in it. It’s a pretty angry and dark film, which is sort of what we wanted to make at the time. Every time I see someone go, ‘Yeah, it’s a black-comedy!’ you go, ‘There’s a couple of laughs, but it wasn’t designed to be ha-ha funny.’

When asked how he’d describe the film, he left us all with a response that makes us more excited now to see the film in October.

It’s very very dark. It starts out feeling like a Disney film and, by the end, it feels like it takes a pretty dramatic, serious turn to, like, an acid trip of some form.’

So, we love Disney films and when we think of a movie turning into an acid trip, we jump to Requiem for a Dream – and while Suburbicon will almost certainly have a different plot (think less…hard drugs and more…mobster murder) – the film is one that sticks with you. We expect nothing less from Suburbicon.

After hearing Clooney’s take on the film, do you see the trailer in a different light? Let us know.
