NASA Plans to Beam a Social Media Message into Space and They Are Asking for Your Help

Social media is about to boldly go where no social media has gone before – SPACE!

It’s the 40th anniversary of Voyager 1, the longest continuously operating space mission ever!  In order to celebrate, NASA is looking to send some positive vibes into space inspired by the messages of goodwill which were previously carried into space on Voyager’s Golden Record.  This time around, NASA is updating their method of delivering the message as the plan to beam a selected tweet into space on September 5, 2017.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to choose which tweet gets sent.  NASA is accepting submissions right now through August 15th.  All you have to do is send out your message on social media and use the hashtag #MessageToVoyager.  The folks over at NASA will then narrow down the selections and give the public the opportunity to vote in order to choose the winner.  Voting will be open from August 23rd through the 29th.  Here are the official rules for submissions:

What (and how) can I submit a #MessageToVoyager?

  • Messages can have a maximum of 60 characters (A-Z, 0-9, spaces and punctuation)
  • Tag submissions #MessageToVoyager
  • Post messages on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google+ or Tumblr
  • Privacy settings on submission posts must be public to be considered
  • Submissions must be received by 11:59 p.m. PDT on Aug. 15, 2017
  • JPL, NASA and the Voyager team will select their top picks
  • The public will choose the winning message by poll on this page from these top picks
  • NASA will beam the winning message through space toward Voyager 1

NASA already has some great submissions coming in and we are loving the pop culture references in some of them.  Others are tweeting some pretty impactful and heartfelt messages.  Check out a few of our favorites below.  What would your tweet say?
