Jennifer Lawrence Speaks out on the ‘Passengers’ Twist that Upset Critics

Remember that movie Passengers starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence that everyone was super excited about, cost a ton of money and garnered Oscar buzz months before anyone had even seen it?

Well, then you will probably also remember that film was slightly underwhelming and a critical flop, which was surprising considering the script had been a favorite since it first appeared on the 2007 Black List and the marketing for the film was incredibly impressive.

The movie followed a spacecraft traveling to a distant planet while transporting thousands of people has a malfunction in its sleep chambers. As a result, two passengers (Pratt and Lawrence) are awakened 90 years early. The issue was that the film was made to look like both Pratt and Lawrence woke up by accident due to some sort of malfunction. However, when it came time to see the film that actually wasn’t the case. Pratt, who did wake up by accident, is desperate for human contact and decides to wake up Lawrence’s character without her consent. A lot of critics didn’t favor this plot twist and their reviews showed it.

Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence never really spoke out about the criticism of the film until she sat down with Vogue for their upcoming September issues and briefly addressed it. The film made more than $300 million globally and according to Vogue, Lawrence is still very proud of the film, but she agreed with a lot of the film’s reviews that the movie should have started with her waking up.

“I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t spot it. I thought the script was beautiful — it was this tainted, complicated love story. It definitely wasn’t a failure. I’m not embarrassed by it by any means. There was just stuff that I wished I’d looked into deeper before jumping on.”

Be sure to check out Jennifer’s entire interview in the September issue of Vogue!
