‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Director James Gunn Originally Wanted David Bowie to Play a Member of Yondu’s Crew

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took some time out of his busy schedule on Friday to answer some fan questions via his Facebook page.  Gunn enjoys the opportunity to interact with his fans and fairly frequently does so in the forms of a Facebook live video or, in this case, responding to questions typed in the comments on a photo.

It’s not new news that Gunn had originally planned for musician David Bowie to have a cameo in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.  In a heartfelt tribute to Bowie, who passed away in January of 2016, Gunn wrote that they had reached out to him regarding a part in the film.  Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige approached Gunn about the idea and clearly, he was thrilled.  Gunn wrote:

“I told him nothing in the world would make me happier, but I heard from common friends he wasn’t doing well.  We heard back that he was okay and it could potentially happen. Who knows what that was about? But, for whatever reason, it made my Twitter revelation [of his passing] more of a surprise.”

Sadly, Bowie passed away before he was able to film and we never knew what role he would have played in the film until now.  In Gunn’s Facebook Q&A, a fan asked the question we’ve all wanted to know – what role would David Bowie have played in the film?

Gunn answered by saying, “I wanted David Bowie to play a member of Yondu’s original crew.”

How insanely epic would that have been?  David Bowie and Michael Rooker would have played so well off of each other!  Bowie would have been a perfect addition to Yondu’s crazy bunch and fans on Facebook agree.  One fan replied, “Aww man, I would have loved that so much.”  Another replied, “That would have been amazing.”  And finally, the fan who asked the question perfectly summed up our feelings by replying, “Would have suited him perfectly! Thanks for the reply, keep up the good work!”

We 100% agree that Bowie would have been perfect in that role.  What do you think?  Would you have liked to see David Bowie as part of Yondu’s crew?  Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
