Anne Hathaway in Talks to Star in Live-Action ‘Barbie’ Film, Replacing Amy Schumer

It looks like the live-action Barbie film has found its new star.

Production on the film was announced late last year with comedian Amy Schumer cast in the main title role.  Schumer’s casting in the role received a considerable amount of backlash via the internet though, she kept a positive and progressive attitude through it all.  Earlier this year, however, Schumer unexpectedly and suddenly dropped out of the film citing scheduling and filming conflicts leaving the film without a Barbie.

Earlier this week, news broke that Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway may be looking to fill those Barbie shoes.  A spokesperson for the film studio confirmed that Hathaway is considering the role, however, stressed that her involvement is not finalized.

Sony Pictures is the studio responsible for creating the film which centers around the 50-year-old Mattel toy icon, Barbie.  The studio hopes to revamp the toy brand by also focusing on topical issues such as self-esteem, what it means to be perfect and female empowerment.

Hathaway has won an Oscar for her emotionally brilliant portrayal of Fantine in the 2012 film version of Les Miserables and can be seen on the big screen next in the upcoming films Ocean’s Eight and Nasty Women.

The live-action Barbie film is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on June 29, 2018.
