Selma Blair Joins the Television Reboot of ‘Heathers’

The television series reboot of the 1998 cult classic film Heathers is starting to come together in production.  Just last week, it was announced that Selma Blair will be j0ining the series in a reoccurring role.

The reboot has undergone some changes while in production.  Originally, the series was scheduled to be released in the fall of 2017 on the TV Land network however now, the series is being pushed back to early 2018 and is being moved to Paramount Network.  Also, while the series went through development and the pilot stages as a half hour comedy series, the final product is being shifted to hourlong dramedy episodes instead.  In a way, this is an improvement as this can allow for the reboot series to take on a darker tone, similar to the essence of the original film.

The series will kick off with a 10-episode season set in present day with an updated twist to the cult classic characters.  Heather McNamara (originally played by Lisanne Falk) will be a lesbian in the upcoming series and will be portrayed by Jasmine Mathews.  Heather Duke (originally played by Shannen Doherty) will be transgender whose real name is Heath.  This role will be played by Brendan Scannell.  Heather Chandler (originally played by Kim Walker) is said to be a character similar to Martha Dumptruck and will be played by Melanie Field.  Rounding out the casting is newcomers James Scully who will be playing the role of J.D. (originally played by Christian Slater) and Grace Victoria Cox who will be playing Veronica (originally played by Winona Ryder).  Doherty is reportedly guest starring in the pilot episode.

Selma Blair’s role will be named Jade.  She will be playing the stepmother of Heather Duke and is described as, “a stripper and menthol smoker who is rough around the edges but with a bit of glamor to her. She’s biding her time until her 82-year-old husband kicks the bucket.”
