Sonequa Martin-Green Speaks Beautifully Against Racist Remarks Towards Star Trek: Discovery

There’s that old quote we’ve all been told, probably by a parent or grandparent, ‘You can’t make everyone happy, you’re not pizza‘. While that’s true, it doesn’t mean that it’s easy to understand that some people simply won’t like you, or won’t like things that you’re part of, just because of who you are.

We’re not saying that anyone deserves to be the recipient of backlash, bullying, or otherwise negative behavior…but it’s completely impossible for us to understand something like racism. It’s easy to think that, by this time in our lives, racism should be an issue of the past – but it most certainly is not.

That was proven to be true once again when the new series Star Trek: Discovery, was the recipient of some racist comments on social media. Among other…colorful statements, one of them went as far as to say that Star Trek: Discovery was a case of white genocide.

George Takei spoke out against the racist comments first, saying that we have aliens of our own called ‘trolls’ online and that they often speak…out of turn. He went on to say that they’re speaking now without knowing anything about the new series

“Today in this society we have alien life forms that we call trolls. And these trolls carry on without knowing what they’re talking about and knowing even less about the history of what they’re talking about. And some of these trolls go on to be presidents of nations,” Takei said on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” Sunday.

You know, when you go out into space, you’re going to have even greater diversity. These so-called trolls haven’t seen a single episode of the new series because it hasn’t been aired. And they don’t know the history of ‘Star Trek,’ that Gene Roddenberry created this with the idea of finding strength in our diversity.’

One of our favorite people also stood up against internet trolls and she did so with a sense of class and humility that makes her the incredible person, not just actress, that so many of us look up to. Sonequa Martin-Green had this to say about the people who have made such statements about Star Trek: Discovery.

Well, I would encourage them to key into the essence and spirit of Star Trek that has made it the legacy it is — and that’s looking across the way to the person sitting in front of you and realizing you are the same, that they are not separate from you, and we are all one. That’s something Star Trek has always upheld and I completely believe that is why it’s been a mainstay in society in the hearts of so many people for so many decades. I would encourage them to look past their opinions and social conditioning and key into what we’re doing here — which is telling a story about humanity that will hopefully bring us all together.’

The way she makes it seem like such an easy thing to do – because, well, it is – should hopefully be understood by everyone. We are all here for such a short amount of time, why not spend it making the world better, brighter, and safer for everyone. No matter what they look like.
