Alicia Silverstone Reveals ‘Clueless’ Almost Didn’t Get Made

When you talk about classic films from the 1990s, no doubt the film Clueless comes to mind.

Starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacy Dash, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, Donald Faison and Breckin Meyer the film followed a group of rich valley girls through the trials and tribulations of high school.  When the popular group of girls, Cher (Silverstone) and Dione (Dash), decide to take on the project of transforming a new student, Tai (Murphy) into one of the popular girls in the school.  During the process of Tai’s transformation, Cher learns that there just may be more to life than just beauty and popularity.

The film received mostly positive reviews from critics and has since become sort of a cult classic.  It certainly helped boost the career of the film’s star Alicia Silverstone who says the film “changed her life.”

Silverstone also said in an interview with Variety that our classic, beloved Clueless almost never happened!  Silverstone told Variety:

“One studio said no to it, they didn’t think anyone was interested in watching a movie about a young girl.  Those people now kick themselves that they were not part of that film. They were like, ‘We don’t think anybody is going to care. It’s not going to sell tickets.’”

Can you imagine the world without Clueless?  AS IF!  We are totally buggin’!  Luckily, producer Scott Rudin and Paramount swooped in to save the film and, to quote Silverstone, “It was a huge success.”

In the below interview, Silverstone reveals how she’s extremely proud of the film.  She recently attended a screening at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles and, while watching the film with her 6-year-old son, she realized how grateful she was for all the hard work that went into that production.  Silverstone said:

“We were laying under the stars.  Seeing it on the screen like that was an incredible thing to share with my son and go, ‘Wow I’m really proud of that.’ I’m proud of all the work on the screen, all the different artists who created that. Super proud.”
