When you think of Atari, chances are you think back to the 70s and 80s and you think of games like Pong, ET: The Extra Terrestrial, Barnstorming, Asteroids, Space Invaders, and several other nostalgic, 8-bit games which you remember playing as a kid. Atari was one of the first big companies in the industry and they continued to sell consoles all the way until 1992 when production ceased.
It’s been almost 25 years since the company has released any type of new gaming console but, that’s all about the change. During E3, Atari hinted that some new merchandise might be on the way. Additionally, earlier this month, Atari released the below video teasing “a brand new Atari product. years in the making,” while also launching a brand new site for something called AtariBox. The new site currently hosts a subscribe options to a mailing list for those who want to be the first to know.
People have wondered if the teasers were faked, especially since Atari filed for bankruptcy in 2013 but, in an interview with GameBeats, Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said that, in fact, the gaming system is back. He didn’t speak in extreme detail (or really, he didn’t speak in any detail at all) but, he told Game Beats that,“We’re back in the hardware business.”
Chesnais declined to comment further on the new system but did reveal that it will be based on PC technology and that they are still working to finalize the design. A reveal of the new system and design will happen at a later date.
While the game console market is pretty saturated, the name Atari just brings about all these nostalgic, happy memories of sitting in front of the your tiny TV on a rainy day and just playing what, at the time, you thought were the coolest games ever! Is it possible that the new Atari system could be successful based on nostalgia alone? What do you think of the above teasers? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
