Matthew Perry Discusses Why He Will Always Say “No” to a ‘Friends’ Reunion

Ever since the show went off the air in 2004, it seems that fans have been petitioning for a series reunion NBC’s Friends to take place.  Over the years, there has been much speculation and many rumors that some type of a reunion was in the works but sadly, it never happened.  Even recently, a mysterious reunion teaser poster appeared on social media causing quite a stir amongst fans but, that too turned out to be fake.

In the past, cast, crew and creators have confirmed, on numerous occasions, that there would not be a reunion or a revival of the series any time soon and, to this day, they are still addressing those rumors.  In a recent interview with Variety, Matthew Perry, who played Chandler Bing on the hit series, spoke about his new play and, also addressed why he will always say “no” to a friends revival.  Perry said:

“I have this recurring nightmare. I’m not kidding about this. When I’m asleep, I have this nightmare that we do Friends again and nobody cares.  We do a whole series, we come back, and nobody cares about it. So if anybody asks me, I’m gonna say no. The thing is: We ended on such a high. We can’t beat it. Why would we go and do it again?”

Now, this is actually reasoning that we can understand.  The Friends finale was so… well, final.  The last episode of the series tied up all lose ends, brought our favorite characters to place of happiness with bright futures a head of them and metaphorically (and literally) closed the door to the Friends apartment forever.  That finale, my friends, is what we call CLOSURE!  Seriously.

Even though Perry does not want to revisit the series of Friends with any kind of reunion, he is still grateful for his time on the show and credits everything that has happened with his career to that series.  Perry said:

“I was on a sitcom for 10 years, and it was the greatest. It gave me every opportunity I ever had. Even doing this play is happening because I was on that show.”

So, while a reunion may never happen, at least we have amazing memories of our time spent with beloved Friends.
