"The Goonies": 32 Years Later - Where Are They Now?

The Goonies celebrated its 32 year anniversary on June 7.  While some older movies from the 80’s tend to fall victim to super corniness, this 1985 classic hit has endured the test of time and is still relevant to this day. The story revolves around the friendship of a group of kids from the neighborhood who have all grown up together. They embark on a crazy adventure searching for pirate’s treasure to help save their neighborhood from developers, all while trying to escape the clutches of the Fratelli family.

The cast was made up of some great young actors and their on screen chemistry showed through in their performances. Many of the actors are still thriving in their respective careers. So what have they been up to since they saved the ‘Goon Docks’?

Michael ‘Mikey’ Walsh (Sean Astin)

Mikey was the heart of the crew. His faith that they would save their childhood home never wavered despite what everyone else thought. He led the group through their adventures and had a special connection with the famous pirate. His speech in water well was inspiring and memorable. “Don’t say that. Never say that. Goonies never say die!”

Astin has gone on to maintain a steady career, starring in movies like Rudy and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The later of the projects, making him a household name again thanks to the popularity of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels.

Brandon ‘Brand’ Walsh (Josh Brolin)

Brandon took the role of ‘babysitter’ for his younger brother and friends. He did his best to keep them out of trouble, but unfortunately for him, he was outnumbered. He pined for Andy and in the end he succeeded in winning her over.

Brolin has had an impressive career that has grown into major lead roles in films such as No Country For Old Men, in which he won an Academy Award. He also starred in Milk, True Grit, Sicario, Everest, and most recently he has been cast as Cable in Deadpool 2.

Clark ‘Mouth’ Devereaux (Corey Feldman)

Mouth was the obnoxious ‘know-it-all’ kid that drove everyone crazy. Despite wanting to pummel him at times, he did show that he had a sensitive side and there was more to him than just his ‘mouth’. His relationship with Stef was especially endearing.

Feldman went on to star in another classic tale of a young boy’s journey in Stand By Me. He also became the other half of the famous “Corey” duo with close friend Corey Haim, collaborating on films such as The Lost Boys, License to Drive, and Dream a Little Dream. He continues to work and build his music career.

Richard ‘Data’ Wang (Jonathan Ke Quan)

Data was the nerdy inventor in the group. Always resourceful, he seemed to have the right gadgets to get the gang out of some sticky situations. Who can forgot the “slick shoes” or how about all his “booty traps”? His love for creating various inventions made him a fun character to watch.

Before The Goonies, Quan had already played a major role in Steven Spielberg’s hit, Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. He played Short Round who was Harrison Ford’s adorable side kick. Quan has continue to work in films, but opted for more behind-the-scene role as a stunt coordinator in films such as X-Men and The One.

Lawrence ‘Chunk’ Cohen (Jeff Cohen)

Chunk was the kid that could always bring on the laughter. His clumsiness and knack for getting into trouble drove the rest of the group a little crazy, but they still loved him. How could you not adore this kid? The way he could sniff out ice cream and always had a reserve of chocolate was amazing! The bond he discovers with Sloth was so heartwarming as it showed how willing he was to open his arms and heart to everyone.

Cohen did not end up staying in front of the cameras like his fellow cast mates. He ended up becoming a lawyer and practicing entertainment-related law. He has shed his ‘chunky’ weight and grown to live a pretty regular life.

Andrea ‘Andy’ Carmichael (Kerri Green)
The Goonies was not made up only boys. The crew had a couple of ladies that rounded out the oddball group. Andy served as the popular cheerleader who Brand crushed on. She of course was dating the school bully, but would eventually come around and fall for the sweet guy ‘next door’.

Green, like Cohen, did not end up staying in the entertainment field. She went on to college, got married, and lived quietly in upstate New York with her family. Green, however, did eventually find her way back into the business occasionally appearing on the small screen on shows such as ER and Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit.

Stephanie ‘Stef’ Steinbrenner (Martha Plimpton)

Stef served as Andy’s fiesty best friend. Her banter with Mouth and no-nonsense attitude gave the group a bit of an edge. She did not mess around when it came to the boys and their crazy antics. Despite the fact that the whole adventure was not her cup of tea, she remained at her friend’s side for support.

Plimpton, like some of the others, has continued to on to some additional memorable roles in movies such as Running on Empty and Parenthood. She continues to act crossing over to TV roles on shows like Raising Hope and The Good Wife. She even has credits in the theater that have garnered her Tony Award nominations.

In a list of must sees, this movie is a stand out classic that every kid must experience! Watch the trailer below.
