Selena Gomez did an interview with Elvis Duran on Monday and one of the topics they discussed is the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. The show, based off of the book, was a project close to Selena’s heart and she’s been openly passionate about it since news first dropped that the series was coming. She is now the latest celebrity close to the series to defend it and to speak as to why they didn’t shy away from any of the topics, why they seemed to embrace them.
She went on to say that she understands the controversy of the series coming around in the way that it did because it’s uncomfortable, but it’s also what’s happening right now, and it would be more uncomfortable to keep ignoring it.
‘I feel like if this is what we’re going to talk about, we might as well as do it in a way that’s honest, is real, and stays true to the book. So all the questions that came up, and all the talk about it is valid and I understand it. That stuff is uncomfortable for people to talk about, but it is happening and hopefully, it opened the door for people to actually accept what’s happening and actually go and change it, talk about it.‘
She went on to bring up the fact that it also seems so different because the kids who are being exposed to these things are so young. When we were that age, we couldn’t have imagined seeing, hearing, saying, or even doing what some kids in second and third grade are up to now, and she’s right.
‘The content is complicated. It’s dark and it has moments that are honestly very hard to swallow, and I understood that we were doing something that is difficult, but these kids today are so exposed to things that I would never even comprehend when I was 8. My cousin teaches third grade and they’re doing things and saying things that I couldn’t even fathom.‘
Towards the end of the interview, she spoke about season 2 and what we should expect. While she didn’t give anything away, she did say that there would be some inspiration coming from season 1, and we can’t wait to watch it.
‘In season 2 we’re going to answer a lot of questions, and a lot of resolution with the characters is going to come. We go into the resolution of where these characters are going. I was freaking out about where they were going because it was really encouraging and empowering. We’re going to take a little inspiration from the first, and bring it into the second.‘
Season 2 should premiere some time in 2018. We’ll keep you updated as we can.
