‘Arrow’: EP Talks Flashbacks and Season 6 Plan

Arrowverse went through an entire wave of emotions when it came to the season finales for our favorite TV Shows. Both the finales for The Flash and Supergirl moved us to tears, but nothing made our jaws drop quite like the Season 5 finale of Arrow.

The hit CW tv-series based off of the DC Comics left us on quite the explosive note, as Oliver watched as Lian Yu was completely engulfed in flames, with all of his loved ones on its shores.

We learned earlier this year that at the conclusion of this season, Arrow would be done with it’s flashbacks. As the season’s progressed, a lot of people became critical of the flashback scenes, saying that it took away from the current storyline.

Recently, Arrow’s executive producer Marc Guggenheim spoke with Access Hollywood about the show, where he teased another island flashback. When the creator was asked if the premiere’s flashback would take audiences back to Lian Yu, here’s what Guggenheim said:

“If you take me literally at my word, yes, back to the island.”

If you’re currently finding yourself saying ‘not another flashback!’, don’t worry. Later on in the interview, Guggenheim did state that the flashback won’t be tied to Oliver’s past. . In fact, the EP the writing team’s final day of flashback planning, and Guggenheim said he was relieved the back-and-forth time jumps were over.

“We were in the room yesterday and we were going through the flashbacks and we got to the final beat of the flashbacks, I turned to all the writers and said ‘Oh my God, we’re done.’”

Even though we won’t have a heavy flashback presence in the seasons going forward, we can certainly still expect the random flashback scene every now and then, which certainly makes sense. Earlier this season we saw some flashbacks that disclosed some details about Oliver and Felicity’s relationship, and it worked into the episode incredibly well.

“Last year, when we sort of realized we’re going to go past Season 5, we basically made a collective decision that Season 5 would be the final year of flashbacks. Next year, in Season 6, what we’ll end up doing is we’ll do some episodes without any sort of flashbacks. We’ve [also] established over the first four seasons of proof of concept that we can do flashback stories that don’t involve what I call the island narrative, even when he’s not on the island.”

Flashbacks or not, all I can tell you is….is that I’ve already got my countdown calendar going of days until my Arrow comes back!!

Arrow will return in the fall.
