Steven Yeun Talks Life and Death of Glenn at WSC Nashville

This past weekend, Steven Yeun revealed his thoughts and feelings about Glenn during his panel at Walker Stalker Con Nashville.

He was first asked about Glenn’s death and leaving the show.

“It’s hard to leave family after seven years of being together but also it feels very complete,” Yeun said. “Something needed to happen to propel this next season… I think the coolest part about the death in and of itself is, I don’t know if there’s ever been a character like Genn before in any facet,in the way he walks and the way he talks, … to have died and to have in death such a lasting impact. I think it’s like awesome. I think if Glenn were to continue, he could at some point fade into the back but there’s this great explanation point.”

Yeun brought up a good point about the audience’s reaction to the season seven premiere.

“I think it was a lot of things. People think it was the gore aNFL it was gory but it wasn’t anymore gory than anything we had shown before. I think it was just watching someone you feel like you’d known getting killed that way. Getting killed in a way that was not like, Oh, man, look at Noah getting ripped up. That was gnarly but it just happened to him. This was like you could have stopped but you just keep going.”

Thoughout the panel, Yeun admitted that he loved he secrecy behind his death and playing jokes on people.

But Yeun does wish we got to explore more of Glenn and his backstory.

“But then I realized it’s also kind of cool to be kind of mysterious… Let’s be honest, you don’t see Asian people on TV and when we do, they’re how we assume them to be,” Yeun said. “What’s cool about Glenn is we didn’t have to go into his backstory to reveal his integrity, his pedigree, his sense of humor…”

From here, fans got to ask Yeun some questions. Many were geared toward his legacy- Maggie and his unborn child.

As for the name, Yeun suggested that we “gotta name the baby Hershel… or Barnabas… no, Hershel”

He was asked what he would if Negan killed Maggie, or if he had never met her.

“If Negan were to kill Maggie, he probably would’ve died to,” Yeun said. “I mean, what’s the point, then?”

He also thinks he would’ve died if he never met Maggie.

“He wanted to prove himself quite a bit. He wanted to go out like a hero. He would’ve put himself in dangerous situations like he always has and eventually that would have caught up to him.”

Remember back in season 2 that Maggie’s nickname for him was Walker Bait.

So how exactly will Maggie carry Glenn’s legacy?

She’s strong, she’s tough, she’s like a bad-a— woman,” Yeun said. “You look at really and wonder what makes her so strong tough and bad-ass but I think it’s because she never lived selfishly or for herself. She always lived selflessly for either her child or the legacy of her sister or the legacy of her father or the legacy of her husband. A person like that will continue regardless.”

It’s been almost a year since Glenn’s death, but  his memory lives on through Maggie and his baby.
