Fox’s ‘New Mutants’ to Add ‘Strangers Things’ Star Charlie Heaton

The X-Men family is continuing to grow as Fox has announced another casting addition for its upcoming film X-Men: New Mutants.  Charlie Heaton, who plays Jonathan Bryers on Netflix’s Stranger Things is reportedly in negotiations to join the series.

Heaton’s role will be to play Sam Guthrie, better known as Cannonball whose powers include the ability to propel himself into the air.

He would be joining a pretty awesome cast including Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) who will play Illyana Rasputin (aka. Majik) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) who will play Rahne Sinclair (aka. Wolfbane) who have both already signed on for the film.  Rosario Dawson is reportedly also in negotiations to join the production as a mentor figure to the teen new mutants.

New Mutants is looking to take on somewhat of a different approach to superhero films, and is branching out into almost ta superhero/horror film combo.  Director Josh Boone said the following relating to the upcoming film:

A darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes…. We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.’

Consider us intrigued!  New Mutants has a release date of April 13, 2018 and is expected to begin shooting in July of this year.
