On Sunday, May 14th, NBC Executives had a conference call with reporters discussing a slew of rumors around The Voice, Idol and casting decisions being done with negative intent. NBC recently cast Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson as judges on The Voice and it’s been called a deliberate move ever since the announcement was made. The phone call was an attempt to clear the air today.

Paul Telegdy, NBC’s President of Alternative and Reality, gave a statement about asking Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson joining The Voice.

We’ve been talking to those two for a long time about joining ‘The Voice’. They’ve both been great coaches for ‘The Voice’. We didn’t make the connection” between any potential competition for roles in the upcoming reboot of ‘Idol.’

The NBC Network actually considered Idol but decided to pass on it. NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt added to the conversation and went as far to say that the network didn’t need Idol.

We didn’t need Idol. We did have conversations with them about Idol. We recognize the franchise is great. … We just decided we have The Voice and a couple of music competition shows that we’re down the road developing that you may see coming to the schedule as early as next summer. We thought we’re going to stick with our hand.‘PP“The audience hadn’t told us there’s a compelling reason to bring it back, either.”

Paul continued the conversation with one additional added statement.

The audience hadn’t told us there’s a compelling reason to bring it back, either.

NBC is a very successful network so the comments were not unfounded, and we believe that The Voice bringing in Kelly and Jennifer was a good business move and also a great move for potential stars that the show will produce. In the long run, that’s what matters.
