Sarah Michelle Gellar opens up about Postpartum Depression

Sarah Michelle Gellar is one of the many celebrities bravely opening up about mental health recently. May is mental health awareness month, and on top of that, healthcare in the United States is one of the most heavily debated topics in politics right now. With healthcare now still lacking on the mental health front, the changes that could be coming our way have been frightening.

For these reasons and more, celebrities are using their platforms to get necessary conversations started.

In an Instagram post, Sarah got candid about her postpartum depression and she also said that getting help helped her make it through the dark days and now, she feels like this life is the best life she could have been given.

“Having kids is wonderful, and life changing, and rarely what you’re prepared for. I love my children more than anything in the world. But like a lot of women, I too struggled with postpartum depression after my first baby was born. I got help and made it through, and every day since has been the best gift I could ever have asked for. To those of you going through this, know that you’re not alone and that it really does get better.”

She also encouraged anyone who believes that postpartum depression should be covered by healthcare to reach out to their representatives before using the hashtag #NotAPreExistingCondition. If you search the hashtag on social media platforms you’ll see many stories like Sarah, some from other celebrities too, and the honesty in them is beautiful.

For the month of May, keep a look out on Twitter and Instagram, plus other media websites for even more stories of celebrities encouraging people to ask for help, to talk about their mental health, and to know that it’s okay to not be okay.
