This Is Us Takes Home MTV’s Tear-Jerker Award
In true ‘tear-jerker’ fashion, This Is Us took home the Tear-Jerker Award at MTV’s Movie & TV awards on May 7th. The series went up against scenes in Grey’s Anatomy, Moonlight, Me Before You, and Game of Thrones and while each scene focused upon brought audiences around the world to tears; the Jack and Randall scene stole the show.
In the scene, Jack is called upon in Randall’s karate class and the instructor asks Jack if he is willing to carry Randall. The moment is a lasting one.
‘As Randall’s father, you are his foundation. Jack, your back was built to carry your son through life, are you willing to hold him up no matter what comes his way?‘
The moment was one of the, probably hundreds, of the series’ first season that brought us to tears but this one had a bit of a different emotion behind it. It was raw and powerful and it was relatable to parents everywhere. In a world where Jack was unsure if he was fit to be Randall’s father, he proves that as long as he is able to carry him through whatever comes their way, and to love him in the process, that he’s more than qualified.
Something in that moment hits Jack and also steals Rebecca’s breath, there was more to the specific episode but the win focused on that scene specifically. We’ve all depended on our parents for significant moments in our lives, and it’s the emotion pride and the humble nature that supports that pride within Jack that makes him the father that he was to those children. All three of them.
Milo Ventimiglia and Lonnie Chavis accepted the award and they were both very appreciative of the series, fans, and writers. This Is Us is one of the best shows in television history and it’s made a lasting impression on those who have watched it. We were drawn in from the first day and are anxiously anticipating season 2.
It’s a show that does bring you to tears, but it also brings you to hope and to love – there’s not much else you could ask for. Except, of course, a work/school absentee note for the days after the series returns. Thanks for that, Milo!
