Colton Haynes joins #MyYoungerSelf Campaign

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and celebrities are speaking out about their own personal struggles and their triumphs as well. When you’re stuck in the throws of a mental health crisis, it’s easy to feel alone – like you’re the only one experiencing darkness. While, in your mind, those feelings seem grounded; it helps to see people doing what they can to show you that they’ve gone through it too.

It’s especially nice to see celebrities and people of circumstance using their platform to speak out on mental health and their coping mechanisms. One celebrity who has spoken out recently is Colton Haynes for the #MyYoungerSelf Campaign.

The campaign is put on by The Child Mind Institute and will feature a public figure giving advice to their younger self each day of the month. The campaign aims to help change the stigma about mental health and learning disabilities in children and young adults.

Colton shared his story of anxiety

I think some advice I would give to myself when I was younger, especially about anxiety, would be that it’s OK to be anxious. Also, a really, really good way to help yourself get over anxiety is to tell yourself that you’re excited instead of that you’re anxious.

He went on to say: “Whenever you start to get a little anxious, just tell yourself, ‘I’m excited about this. I’m not anxious about this.’ And that really does tend to help.

Colton said a few words that were incredibly important to children and young adults around the world. The words you are not alone.

You’re not alone. I think that that’s really something that I’ve learned in my recovery process for anxiety. There’s millions of people out there who suffer from crippling anxiety, whether it be from fainting or from sweating or so many [other] different ailments from anxiety. There’s so many people that have it and suffer from it, so you’re not alone. It gets so much better once you’re able to learn the tools to cope with it.

You can check out the campaign here and see other celebrities who have shared their own stories and ones who will in the future.
