Chris Evans: ‘Our Humanity Should Guide Us’
We know we’ve said it before and we’re sure we’ll say it a thousand times more, Chris Evans is actually Captain America. There are a number of times and many ways he’s shown this; from big actions to small ones – he’s got a heart of gold.
When it comes to social media, Chris is no ‘keyboard warrior’, instead, he uses his platform and his circumstance to stand up for people who need it, for equality, and against people who aim to do harm or to belittle people for being who they are and for what they’ve experienced. Chris tweets often about everything from a friend of a friend – or even a stranger – in need to political discussions and things that must be changed for the United States to move forward as a nation.
Most recently, Chris spoke out in defense of a friend who recently shared something incredibly vulnerable with all of us. Jimmy Kimmel and his wife welcomed a new baby into their lives but within hours, they were given some devastating news. Their son was born with a congenital heart defect and on the third day of his life, he underwent a massive surgery. For Jimmy and his wife, this was one of the hardest things they’ve ever had to experience – as a parent, you want to do everything you can to keep your child safe, to protect them. Putting their son’s lives in the hands of someone else was terrifying, but necessary.
The procedure was successful and the family is home, as a unit, and they’re resting up and enjoying time together. While the road will be bumpy, they’re blessed to have one another, and Jimmy is blessed to have support from all over the world.
So, it’s hard to imagine that anyone would use Jimmy’s openness as an opportunity to say anything negative or do anything even remotely undignifying – alas – it happened.
Joe Walsh tweeted something quite negative after Jimmy’s heartfelt speech on his night show. The speech mentioned healthcare and Joe’s response was uncalled for, to say the least.

He received a lot of backlash for the tweet, but Chris Evans handled his in a way that made us love him more than we already do. He politely told Joe that it was okay to disagree on health care, but that what he did next was out of line.

‘Our humanity should guide us’, Chris said, and he’s right. In this situation and in others, we should allow ourselves to understand when words are necessary and to understand times when they are not. Sometimes, allowing someone to have a moment is worth more than voicing your opposing viewpoint. That’s not to say that you should kneel to others and never speak what you believe in your own heart, but with what Jimmy and his family are going through, some condolences may have been more tasteful.
Chris is just one of many celebs who tweeted their love and support to Jimmy and his family in their time of need.
