Samsung Given ‘Green Light’ For Self-Driving Cars

Samsung has been given the go ahead to begin testing a driverless car in South Korea.

The Korean government stated, the car that is set to be tested by the tech company, will have cameras and sensors fitted throughout the vehicle. It will also use a form of artificial intelligence to gather data which will allow it to study how the car will react in bad weather and deal with obstacles.

Of all the tech companies, Samsung is the first that has been given approval, by the government, to test the self-driving cars on the roads of South Korea. Other carmakers like Kia and Hyundai and some research institutions were only given approval by Infrastructure, The Land of Ministry and Transport.

The vehicle that will be tested by Samsung will be a Hyundai equipped with the tech company’s cameras and sensors.

Samsung has had interest in the driverless car industry for some time.

  • 2015 – Samsung establised a business unit to focus on the technology of autonomous driving.
  • 2016 – Purchased U.S. firm Harman for $8 billion. Harman is a developer of software and components for connected cars.
  • 2017 – The company invested in TetraVue. TetraVue is a company that develops 3D technology which is able to identify dangerous and unexpected obstacles that are in front of autonomous cars.

Tech companies such as Apple, Google and Baidu, carmakers like GM and Ford and ride-hailing companies like Uber and Didi all have had a go at self-driving cars.

“The car has become the next big ‘mobile device’, where the tech industry now sees … opportunities. Many companies are investing because everyone else is doing it.” said Robin Zhu, a Hong Kong-based analyst with Bernstein.

Samsung, however, is more interested in developing the technology instead of manufacturing driverless cars. Executives talked about plans to develop a platform that can be sold to car manufacturers.
