‘Girls’ Series Finale: Did It Meet Your Expectations?

It took me a few days to digest the ending of HBO’s Girls series finale since I was feeling slightly conflicted about the last two episodes. *POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD*

A huge fan of the Sex and the City era, I gravitated towards Girls because it centered on similar friendships of a group of women. Unlike Sex and the City, the main characters were younger and a tad more immature in the way they perceived the world, which was refreshing. I was impressed with the first season and the way it depicted the girls. The characters were not perfect and the show wasn’t shy about highlighting those imperfections and pushing boundaries, which for me, made season 1 amazing! However, over the next few seasons, I found myself becoming slightly annoyed with their selfish antics. Nevertheless, I continued to watch in the hopes that we would get to see them mature.

With the Season 6 series finale, I knew that the show would most likely stay unconventional and not give all the girls a ‘happy ever after’ type finale because that’s not the type of show it was, but part of me was disappointed that we didn’t get more closure. In fact, it almost felt that the episode before the series finale titled “Goodbye Tour” was more of a series finale compared to the actual finale titled “Latching.”

In the “Goodbye Tour” each of the girls, Jessa (Jemima Kirke), Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), Marnie (Allison Williams), and Hannah (Lena Dunham) seem to have come to a crossroad in their friendships. Jessa and Hannah were still not speaking due to Jessa’s relationship with Adam (Adam Driver), Marnie was in her own world dealing with her divorce and failing musical career, and Shoshanna seemed to have distanced herself from the rest of the group. What I enjoyed about this episode was the idea that friendships change and, yes people sometimes grow apart, but it doesn’t mean that they won’t find their way back to each other someday. This was hinted at when Hannah and Jessa seemed to come to an understanding during Shoshanna’s party. Each of the girls seemed to have found comfort in where they were in life, even if they agreed to go their separate ways. As they danced the night away and despite the uncertainty that a majority of them felt, I still felt hope about their futures.

Now, cut to the following week, in the episode titled “Latching”, where only Marnie and Hannah appeared, along with Hannah’s mom played by Loreen Horvath. Hannah has now had the baby and is receiving help from Marnie in a cute little house outside of the city. However, Hannah realizes that motherhood is a lot harder than she expected and breaks down. Marnie contacts Hannah’s mother for assistance and in the last scene, Hannah seems to finally come to terms with the fact that it won’t be an easy road but she is strong enough to get through it. My issue with the finale is that I already feel as if I knew Hannah would make it, especially in the scene where she dances by herself in the Shoshanna’s living room, so was the episode after that truly necessary? Maybe not?

In the end, these girls transformed into imperfect and complex women that were all just trying to do their best to navigate through the craziness. Even though the end left me wanting more, I do appreciate the journey. Like the gif here, after watching an episode I always felt like it was acceptable to dance my way through a tough day. It certainly worked for Hannah and the girls!
