Powerful Mulan-Inspired Routine Rocks Dancing With The Stars

As with any talent-based show, there’s a moment where clear leaders are recognized and the level of competition hits new heights. That moment occurred on this week’s episode of Dancing With the Stars, which also just so happened to be a part of its Disney Week!

The night started off with a great musical number with the always-talented Alfonso Ribeiro and it seemed that would be the highpoint of the night. The other dancers all did well but sometimes it’s hard to merge a certain dance style with a musical number. Maybe the song tempo is too slow for the dance, or maybe the song choice begets more of a solo performance than partner dance. These were two such problems that arose with the Beauty & The Beast-inpsired Foxtrot and Frozen-inspired Jazz performances came up. Though there was one performance that perfectly blended dance style, music choice and movie theme: Mulan!

Val Chmerkovskiy choreographed an absolutely incredible Paso Doble for him and his partner Normani Kordei – of the group Fifth Harmony – that was a dream come true. Now for those who don’t know much about ballroom dance, the Paso Doble is a Spanish style of dance that is modeled after the ferocity and power of the bullfights; and as you can imagine this blended perfectly with Mulan’s “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You”.

Having the original artist – and former DWTS contestant – Donny Osmand return to perform the song was a great step towards authenticity. Although the greatest feat of honoring the original film was how the dance incorporated some of the martial arts and staff fighting from the famous Mulan training montage. Even if you’ve never been a fan of dancing, you have to admit this was a pretty powerful routine!
