James Gunn To Direct Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3 & Help Shape Marvel Phase 4

When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, certain names stand out – almost as much as the heroes in the films. James Gunn in one such name. His work on Guardians of the Galaxy was brilliant as he took one of the most outlandish cast of characters and gave us one of the most heartfelt films in the MCU. There’s no doubt he’ll do this again with the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and that’s essentially why Marvel trusted him to work on their upcoming ‘magnum opus’ Avengers: Infinity War. So it should come as no surprise that they’d want him to work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Earlier today, Gunn posted on Facebook about how even if Marvel wanted him back for Guardians 3, he had to know it himself, saying:

There is a history in Hollywood of haphazard endings to trilogies, and I didn’t want to become a part of that dishonorable tradition of pretending the third one doesn’t exist. I couldn’t do it for the money, and I couldn’t do it because it was what other people wanted me to do. I needed to do it because it was what I needed to do. I have never made choices in my career based on anything other than passion and love for the stories and characters, and I didn’t want to start now.

Well thankfully the answer is Yes and James Gunn will write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3; but that’s not all!

Gunn went on to comment about what he plans to do with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and what can be achieved in the future. Since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will come after Avengers: Infinity War, Gunn realizes that this trilogy will serve as a jumping off point for even more heroes and franchises as Marvel moves into Phase 4. With that in mind he revealed that,

It [GotG Vol 3] will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond. I will be working side-by-side with Kevin Feige and the gang to help design where these stories go, and make sure the future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe is as special and authentic and magical as what we have created so far.

Marvel Phase 4 is a LONG way away, but it will represent a complete story shift as Infinity War is the culmination of everything Ironman (2008) set up. Though if James Gunn is a part of the team setting up for Phase 4, then it’ll be one exciting new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
