The Star Wars Celebration began on April 13th in Orlando, Florida and while the convention center was full of life and excitement; an absence was felt, and will always be felt, in the Star Wars fanbase. The loss of Carrie Fisher resonates not just the Star Wars world, but the world of entertainment as a whole.

Carrie was an incredible actress, a strong woman, and someone who was vocal about her fight against mental illness. In fact, upon learning of her death, fans started a hashtag on social media in honor of her bravery and openness with bipolar disorder and how it inspired them to be open about their mental illness’ as well.

I outlasted my problems. I am mentally ill. I can say that. I am not ashamed of that. I survived that, I’m still surviving it, but bring it on. Better me than you.

Because of Carrie, many women and young adults feel brave, they feel inspired, and they feel like they’ve got a hero forever; one who made it okay to be themselves. Those emotions were especially focused on today as the celebration began and her friends and loved ones spoke of their best memories with her, both on and off set.

Among the stars in attendance was Carrie’s daughter, Billie Lourd. Lourd lost her mother and grandmother in a very short window of time and has been a pillar of strength – carrying on their legacy as she creates her own. Billie Lourd had a sweet sentiment to share with fans about how important Princess Leia, and Star Wars fans, were to Carrie.

She loved you because you embraced all of her. The strong soldier she was and the vulnerable side, who fought her own dark side. … She loved this incredible character she got to create — this force, called Leia.

Lourd also led a tribute to her grandmother, and attendees said it was very emotional.

There are more photos available online and as the weekend progresses, we expect more memories will be shared of Carrie and of Princess Leia; and we can’t wait to hear them.
