Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Most Decorated Show in Olivier Award History

The two part Harry Potter and the Cursed Child really cast a spell over the globe since opening in London last July. From record breaking book sales to becoming the most decorated production in Olivier Award history!

The Olivier Awards recognize theatrical excellence in shows based in London. They are named in honor of Laurence Olivier and are considered to be equivalent to Broadway’s Tony Awards.

Cursed Child won an outstanding record of nine awards, surpassing  Matilda (2012),  who tied with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2013), winning seven awards.

Cursed Child won the following categories:

  • Best new play
  • Best director- John Tiffany
  • Best actor- Jamie Parker (Harry Potter)
  • Best Actress in a Supporting Role- Noma Dumezweni (Hermione Granger)
  • Best Actor in a Supporting Role- Anthony Boyle (Scorpius Malfoy)
  • Best Costume Design- Christine Jones
  • Best Set Design- Katrina Lindsay
  • Best Sound Design- Gareth Fry
  • Best Lighting Design- Neil Austin

Cursed Child was nominated for two other awards including best theater choreographer and outstanding achievement in music.

“I am just so pleased and proud that the entire team are being celebrated because there was so much potential for cynicism and skepticism” Parker said about the nominations and winnings.

Jack Thorne, writer for  Cursed Child, said that this production saw many new comers in the audience and hopes that it [Cursed Child] opens up their eyes and keeps them coming back to the theater.

“I hope they come and see our show and then they go and see Curious Incident down the road, and then The Glass Menagerie and then Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf?… and they fall in love with theatre because everything we do is stolen from them.”
