‘Bones’ Series Finale: What Became of Our Favorite Squints and Agents?

Bones has been on air for 12 seasons, making it one of the longest-running dramas for Fox. Last Tuesday, long-time fans were able to bid a final adieu to a show that mixed no nonsense science, suspense and humor.

I’m always a little wary when it comes to series finales (yes I’m still upset with How I Met Your Mother). However, lately I have been relatively satisfied, especially with The Vampire Diaries, which concluded in early March. Like The Vampire Diaries, Bones was given early notice that this would be their final season, allowing them time to tie up lose ends and give fans closure for their favorite characters.

The team had been tested throughout the seasons, especially with Jack Hodgins’s (T.J Thyne) paralysis and Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) losing her father. Through it all they supported each other and that is the core of what we have seen throughout the seasons – their growth as individuals and as a team. It was also great to see some old faces such as Zack Addy (Erin Millegan) and all our curious interns return.

In the final episodes the team was in a race to find a killer Mark Kovac (Gerard Celasco) who targeted Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan. Over the 12 years there have been many psychotic killers that have plagued the team, but this one hit home the hardest for Booth as it brought forth regrets from his past. The series finale also tested Brennan with the bomb causing her to lose the ability to understand difficult material such as her work. She struggled to cope with that loss thinking it was the one thing that made her who she was. In the end, devoted fans were able to watch the gang get their happy endings.

Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) and her husband Hodgins are not only having another baby, but they are creating a children’s book with characters based on their friends. Luckily the bomb did not harm the baby and Angela was able to find their sample book among the debris.

Camille Saroyan (Tamara Taylor) and Arastoo Vaziri (Pej Vahdat) were married and ready to start a family of their own by adopting three boys. Her new family is the reason for Cam taking some time away from the lab. This of course leaves the lab in the hands of the one and only “King of the Lab”, Hodgins! Over the years Hodgins has always referred to himself as the “King of the Lab”, but now it has become reality and his excitement made me chuckle.

Even though James Aubrey (John Boyd) and lab intern Jessica Warren (Laura Spencer) didn’t work out as a couple, Aubrey was able to stay in D.C. and continue to work with the team. I was particularly excited for the possibility of a romance between him and Sara Rue’s character (Karen Delfs).

Finally, Booth is able to reassure Brennan, that losing her ability to process complex information is not why he loved her. In the end she is able to overcome her injuries, but her realization that she is more than just her ‘brain’ is heartwarming. Their dynamic as a couple and work partners has not only been entertaining but it has been absolutely endearing.

As series finales go, this one left me completely gratified! Knowing that our squints and FBI agents were able to overcome so many obstacles over the years and finish out with the promise of a bright future is a relief. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and so after 12 seasons, we must finally say goodbye to this cast of quirky characters.
