‘Supergirl’ Recap ‘Luthors’

Supergirl Recap ‘Luthors’

Lillian Luthor is finally on trial. She meets with Lena in prison, asking her to testify on her behalf. Lena is against it, and once again says that Lillian only claims to love her when she needs something. During the trial, John Corben, aka Metallo, is on the stand when he suddenly attacks. He somehow has Kryptonite again, and he and Lillian escape. Team Supergirl doesn’t know how he managed to get more Kryptonite because Clark disposed of it all, but then footage is found of Lena stealing it. She is arrested and put in jail.

Kara is the only one who believes Lena is innocent. Everyone tries to talk her out of it, none more so than James. He tells Kara that Clark and Lex were friends too. Kara is adamant in her position. James goes to the prison as Guardian, knowing that something is probably going to happen. And he is right. Metallo shows up and busts Lena out. She is not happy to go though.

Lillian tries to convince Lena to join her. They end up at a bunker that Lex had hidden. There are several of these around the world; places where Lex could go if he were in trouble. Only problem is that they need Luthor blood in order to access the arsenal. And that’s why Lillian needed Lena. She refuses to do it, but Cyborg Superman shows up and forces her to unlock the arsenal.

Back at the DEO, Kara is still trying to figure out how to prove Lena’s innocence. Winn figures out that the Kryptonite in Metallo is synthetic and slowly killing him. The material is rapidly decaying and will cause an explosion. Winn is able to track it down, but not before taking another look at the footage of Lena. He recognizes a Hank’s signature on the video, meaning that it had already been doctored. He works his magic and the real thief is Cyborg Superman. Kara flies off to save Lena and stop Lillian.

She arrives, but the Kryptonite is too powerful for her to do much damage. She tries to talk Metallo down, saying that he will die and they can help him. He refuses and keeps using his power. J’onn shows up and protects Kara while she goes to Lena. The three manage to get out as the Kryptonite explodes. Lillian and Cyborg Superman were in a helicopter when the hideout exploded and their location is unknown.

Lena thanks Kara for believing in her (Supergirl told her that Kara’s faith in her never wavered). Lena admits that she has never had a friend before. Kara has even been there for her more than her family ever has been. When Kara leaves, Lena picks up a chess piece and moves it on the board. There’s a flashback to her learning chess with Lillian and Lex. She’s getting quite good and Lillian compliments her, saying she might be a Luthor after all. This is ominous. Will Lena turn? She is being manipulated by Lillian and is aware of that. Lena wouldn’t willingly turn against Supergirl (who has now saved her numerous times) unless something catastrophic were to happen. She trusts Kara, so if she were to find out the truth, would she see that as a betrayal? I’m interested to see where this goes.

Kara and James make up, and she admits that she doesn’t like the way their friendship is anymore. She wants things to go back to normal. They can’t keep trying to protect each other because all they do is make the other unhappy.

In the final scene, Kara admits her feelings for Mon-El. She says that she was in a position once to be with someone, but chose Supergirl instead. Now, she thinks she can have both. She and Mon-El are about to kiss when a white vapor shoots through the room. A man appears, announcing himself to be Mr. Mxyzptlk and that he is in love with Kara Zor-El.

Who is Mr. Mxyzptlk? In the comics, he has the abilities to bend reality and is a trickster. He torments Superman in “cartoon-ish ways.” Why he has come after Kara, we’ll have to wait and see, but maybe he is going after her because he knows her relation to Superman. Torment him by picking on Kara.

Next week’s episode is entitled ‘Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk.’
