Transformers: The Last Knight Superbowl Trailer Reveals… More Of The Same
Back in December we were treated to the teaser for the upcoming Transformers: The Last Knight, and as expected the next trailer was just released as part of Superbowl Sunday (with an extended trailer being released online). Now I’ll never understand how something called “an extended trailer” ends up being less than half the length of a “teaser”, but it’s a Michael Bay film so following logical progressions is rarely the focus. It’s all about spectacle, and this new trailer… honestly didn’t give us much.
A Superbowl Trailer offers a film a real chance to stand out and this trailer did not. There was nothing new given in terms of story or spectacle, and many scenes were actually reused. Optimus is still evil. Mankind still hates all transformers. The planet killer (that may or may not be a re-imagined Unicron) is still coming. The only new thing here is the reappearance of the Dinobot leader Grimlock who seems to appear just to be killed off.
The Last Knight will be Michael Bay’s last Transformers film; but he also said the same thing about Age Of Extinction so take that with a grain of salt. Additionally, considering Hasbro has plans to start it’s own Cinematic Universe comprised of Transformers and GI Joe, it’s hard to really figure what’s in store for this Transformers franchise.
I can safely say that there’s never been a Transformers film with the huge visual scope and expansive mythology as this movie, The Last Knight. – Bay
According to Bay himself, a special writers room was set up to expand the Transformers universe and mythos like never before; but he kind of did that in Age of Extinction… and it was rushed. Could The Last Knight be even more crammed with rushed story? Will this series, its spin offs and final installment be cut in favor of a reboot (a la the Amazing Spiderman trilogy)? Is this actually Michael Bay’s last explosion-filled Transformers film? And why was there no footage of that awesome three-headed dragon transformer?
Perhaps we’ll get the answers to these questions on June 23rd when Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters.
