Legends of Tomorrow Recap ‘Raiders of the Lost Art’

We begin on the Waverider when Rip sent the rest of the team away so they didn’t all go kaboom. He opens up a secret compartment and pulls out a piece of wood. Rip then shuts Gideon down as he accesses the ship’s core.

In the present (kinda), the Legends are trying to figure out their next move and what the Legion of Doom (name courtesy of Nate) will do now that they have the amulet. Amaya suggests that it may have been a piece of a something bigger. Nate does some research and they discover the origin of the Spear of Destiny. Gideon chimes in and says that Rip had a piece of it. Now that the Legends know what the Legion is after, they need to figure out how to stop them. But first, they must take care of a time Aberration  in 1967.

Enter Rip Hunter, or as he is now, Phil, a film student trying to finish his final project. He and his cameraman George Lucas are working on the film when they are interrupted by Damien Darhk and Malcolm Merlyn. They try to take Rip away when the Legends appear. A fight breaks out, but is interrupted by the police. Everyone flees the scene, and Rip is arrested. The Legends break him out, but Rip doesn’t believe anything that they tell him about who he really is.

Once on the Waverider, they run tests and find that his memory has been altered, and not as the result of a time drift. Gideon says the only way this could have happened is if he accessed the core. She says she was shut down right before the Waverider went down, so that’s probably when he did it. Gideon tells them that Rip retrieved something before she was shut down. When Rip awakes, he is less than helpful and says he is just a film student and that Rip Hunter is a figment of his imagination and the subject of his final project.

Meanwhile, Amaya, Nate, and Ray are trying to figure out all they can about the Spear when the boys start having a problem remembering their skills. Amaya asks when this started happening. They determine that the attack by Damien and Malcolm created an Aberration in George Lucas. He ends up quitting film school. Because of this, Nate and Ray aren’t inspired by his films to go into their respective fields. The three set out to try and convince George to go back to school.

Stein and Mick spend the episode together as Stein catches the thief having a conversation with the invisible Leonard. Stein does some scans and it appears that there is a device in Mick’s head that is creating these hallucinations. They believe that the Time Masters must’ve put it there. Mick is just glad that this doesn’t mean he’s completely crazy.

Jax looks through Rip’s script and finds that he wrote about all of them and the Spear of Destiny. Rip says that all the ideas just sort of came to him. The Spear was inspired by a piece of wood that he had. He felt like the best thing to do with the Spear in his script was to have it broken up and hidden. And where is the wood now? With George.

Amaya, Nate, and Ray are talking with George when Damien and Malcolm appear. They try and get the wood from George, but he won’t give it up. They are thrown into a trash compactor (I see what you did there). Nate and Ray tell George that in order to save them now, he has to believe that he will go back to school and make great films. George admits it and the two are able to regain the memories of their abilities. Jax and Sara arrive on the scene to help take down the two baddies, but the tables are turned once Eobard shows up. They are about to be killed when Rip appears in his captain garb, gun in hand, accent back to normal. But it turns out he was just faking it. He does manage to use the Waverider’s guns against the Legion, allowing the Legends to escape. However, he is taken hostage.

This episode was zany but I loved every minute of it. There were so many references to Lucas’ films and I liked the shade thrown toward Howard the Duck. It was a fun episode that was in no way “filler.” The Legends have their goal for the remaining 8 episodes of the season: Save Rip, find the Spear. I am really excited for what’s to come and hope that the show keeps with this lighter tone. Because really, that’s what the show is. It’s fun.

Next week, the episode is entitled ‘The Legion of Doom.’
