Walking in a Winter Wonderland, in the Desert?!

The Sahara is the world’s largest desert covering most of Northern Africa.  Known as one of the hottest and driest places on the planet, temperatures can reach more than 122 degrees Fahrenheit.  With that said, you can imagine the world’s surprise when a freak snow storm left a delicate dusting on the sandy dunes of the Sahara this Monday.

The town of Ain Sefra, located in Algeria, received their first snowfall in 37 years!  The last time snow fell in the Sahara was when a brief blizzard hit the town in February of 1979 (5 years before the Band Aid song Do They Know It’s Christmas stated that “there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime”).

The dusting of the dunes was captured on film in these epically beautiful pictures taken by amateur photographer Karim Bouchetata.  Check out the amazing photos in the gallery below as well as a throwback clip to the 1984 Band Aid classic, Do They Know It’s Christmas.
