‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 Casting News: Paul Reiser, Sean Astin Are Among New Faces in The Upside Down

Stranger Things announced last week that production for the highly-anticipated Season 2 was officially underway.  Today, Entertainment Weekly exclusively announced some exciting casting news for the upcoming second season which is sure to make you feel even more nostalgia, if that’s even possible.

First, joining the cast is Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen.  Berthelsen, a relative newcomer, has been cast in the role of Roman who, according to Netflix is “an emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child. Although she does not live in Hawkins, she is mysteriously connected to the supernatural events at the lab…”  Is this perhaps an Eleven 2.0?

The next fresh face is no stranger to 80’s cinema.  Sean Astin, best known for his roles in Rudy, The Goonies and Lord of the Rings, is joining the cast as Bob Newby.  Newby is described as “a kindhearted former nerd who went to high school with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour) and now manages the local Hawkins RadioShack.”  Astin’s casting is certainly a huge nod to the 1980’s nostalgia vibe (after all, The Duffer Brothers have been quoted as stating The Goonies was a HUGE inspiration for the series) and we can’t wait to see him shine on screen!

The final blast from the past actor joining the second season cast is Paul Reiser.  Best known for his roles in Aliens, Whiplash, and the TV series Mad About you, Reiser has been cast as Dr. Owens, “a high-ranking member within the Department of Energy on a clean-up’ assignment, tasked with containing the events of last year.”

If there’s one thing that we can deduce from this awesome casting news and from their character descriptions, it’s that we can expect Season 2 to be out of this world, literally.  With the addition of Astin’s character alone, we can bet that the kids will be visiting that RadioShack in order to obtain some high-tech 1980’s gadgets to help them along the way in exploring the Upside Down.
