Ranking the Top 5 Horror Movie Classics Just in Time for Halloween

With Halloween merely a few days away, what better time than now to curl up on the couch and scare the living daylights out of yourself? You might want to grab a friend or a blanket to hide behind while doing so. Since there are a ridiculous amount of horror films out there, ranking them is going to be tough, so we are sticking with the popular classics.  Remakes and sequels can be great, but nothing compares to an original. If you haven’t had the courage to watch these top 5 scary films, I highly recommend you try!

5. Halloween (1978)

Talk about a Halloween classic! This movie centers around the ghostly holiday. The original movie, begins with a murder of a 15 year girl, Judith Myers by her 6 year old brother, Michael. The young boy is sent to an institution for 15 years and right before Halloween, he breaks out.  The rest of the movie follows Michael’s path back to his hometown, Haddonfield, Illinois.  His insane need to kill a young girl, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), leaves a bloody trail. Not only is Michael, who is virtually impossible to kill, frightening, but the music sends shivers up my spine! And that mask! Anyone else find the mask just plain freaky and unsettling?

4. Poltergeist (1982)

poltergistA house haunted by poltergeists leaves parents Steve Freeling (Craig T. Nelson) and Diane (JoBeth Williams) struggling to keep their family safe from unseen forces. The mysterious ghosts take a key interest in the family’s youngest daughter, Carol Anne (Heather O’Rouke).  For help, they enlist some parapsychologists to understand the eerie occurrences in the house. When the entities up their creepy antics, it becomes a race to save their little girl and the get their family out alive. Thanks to this movie, I can no longer handle having any television fuzz or the line “They’re here.”

3. The Amityville Horror (1979)

amityvilleWhen movies say they are based on a true story, there always seems to be another level of scariness that gets added to the film. This tale is based on the Lutz family who moved into a Long Island house with a sinister history. The house is believed to be haunted and the episodes of horror the family experiences are terrifying. Knowing that this might have actually occurred to a real family amps up the spook factor!

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

nightmareonelmIf kids weren’t avoiding going to bed before this movie, I’m sure there were a good number of them trying not to sleep after watching this hellish classic. Based on a freaky serial killer who comes after people in their dreams, this story line gave nightmares a whole other meaning! With a mangled face and knives for fingers, his victims are constantly running scared and seriously sleep deprived. Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) and his main target Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) keep the audience on their toes throughout this scream-fantastic thriller.  “One, two, Freddy’s coming for you”…

1. The Exorcist (1973)

exorcistOf all the horror classics, nothing scared me more than the possessed young girl, Regan (Linda Blair)! I remember watching this intensely, on the verge of my seat mostly through the holes covering my eyes. Ellen Burstyn who played Regan’s mother, Chris McNeil, attempts desperate measures to save her daughter who frightens her to the core.  She seeks the assistance of two priests played by Max Von Sydow and Jason Miller whose faith are tested. As if the movie wasn’t enough, fans can watch the TV show based on the movie every Friday on Fox. Yes, I basically scare myself every week now.

So what do you think? Are you intrigued enough to have a night filled with some terror?
I’m sure there are many other great horror classics that didn’t make my top 5. What movies make your list of the best horror classics?
