Legends of Tomorrow Recap ‘The Justice Society of America’

The JSA is so cool.

In 1942, the Legends face off against the Justice Society of America and get their butts handed to them. The JSA is a well-oiled machine and our Legends didn’t really stand a chance. Imprisoned, the Legends insist that they know Rex Tyler because he appeared to them in the future and issued a warning. The JSA don’t really know what to do about the Legends so they tell them to leave 1942 and not get in their way. They are called out on a mission to stop the Nazis in Paris.

We learn more about our historian Heywood, who is the grandson of Commander Steel. We also find out that he has hemophilia, which means that his blood doesn’t clot normally. Even a small injury could kill him. Sara forbids him to go out on any mission so that they can return him to 2016 alive. Heywood doesn’t want to just stay behind. He wants to help the Legends and prove that he can be a hero.

The discussion comes up as to who should replace Rip as the leader of the team. The JSA looked to Stein as the leader and would really only talk to him, so he believes that he is the man for the job. Despite the JSA sending the Legends away, they later find out that the JSA is going to be killed in their Paris mission. They rush to their aid and cause a bunch of problems. The JSA reluctantly agrees to work alongside the Legends to stop the Nazis from getting their hands on the Askaran Amulet. Little do they know that Reverse-Flash has supplied the Nazi leader Baron Krieger with a serum that will give him powers.

The team secures the amulet, but Krieger uses the serum and attacks Ray and Amaya. In the heat of battle, Stein panics and doesn’t know what order to call. Sara steps in and calls for a retreat, but Ray and Amaya are taken by the Nazis. Back on the ship, Stein concedes the leadership position to Sara, saying that she has grown into a fine leader. In the Nazis camp, Ray stalls for time by telling Krieger that he’ll make more of the serum.

The Legends and JSA launch their assault on the Nazi camp and manage to rescue Ray and Amaya. Krieger once again uses the serum and attacks Commander Steel. Heywood comes to his rescue as bombs start to drop. Krieger is killed, but Heywood and Steel are also hit. On the ship, Gideon does what she can, but Heywood has massive internal bleeding. Ray comes to the rescue and uses the serum he was creating for the Nazis to save Heywood’s life. The JSA return to their headquarters while the Legends finally leave 1942.

In the final scene of the episode, Reverse-Flash shows up. He kills Rex before running off with the amulet.

This was a great, action-packed episode. The JSA was super awesome and I hope that the Legends learned a little bit from them. When the Legends do work together, they are unstoppable, but it usually takes a bunch of screw-ups before they get to that point. It will be interesting to see what happens now that Sara is in charge.

I really enjoyed the scenes between Heywood and Steel. There was a lot of emotion between the two of them and their farewell was really well written. Heywood was injected with the enhancement serum so in the coming weeks we will see the ramifications of that. I wonder what his powers will be.

Next week’s episode is entitled ‘Shogun.’
