‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’ Recap ‘Chapter 6’

Well, it’s here! The big twist of the season. And if I may say, I was disappointed with this episode.

Now, I don’t normally state my opinion in recaps, mainly because I like to give everyone who reads these the opportunity to form their own. But…I can’t keep it to myself this time.

I’ve been watching American Horror Story long enough to know that it starts to go downhill and get gimmicky by episode six, but oh my God, this was such a let down.

Part of the draw of American Horror Story for me is that it takes me out of reality for an hour each week. Unfortunately, this new twist returns us to present day where there are cameras and self-inflated egos at every turn.

One of the things I liked about the first half of the season was that we knew it wasn’t real. This second half is asking us to believe that the real people and the real actors behind ‘My Roanoke Nightmare’ would return to the Big Shaker Mansion of their own accord and film a reality show for kicks.

The new show, which is titled ‘Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell’, will chart the group’s stay at the mansion during the blood moon, where the show’s producer Sidney (Cheyenne Jackson) hopes to expose secrets, lies, and murder confessions.

Throughout the episode, we’re made privy to behind the scenes negotiations and interviews. We’re given insight into the actors who played key characters on ‘My Roanoke Nightmare.’ We also find out that everything went awry between the real Matt and Shelby after the show aired.

And now, we’re going to sit through another several weeks’ worth of episodes to rehash it all.

So, here’s what you need to know about everyone involved in ‘Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell’…

  • During pre-production, two people die on the Roanoke property. Despite these bad omens, show runner Sidney moves forward with production.
  • Matt (Andre Holland) and Shelby (Lily Rabe) have separated. And Shelby had an affair with Dominic Banks (Cuba Gooding Jr.), the actor who played Matt on the show.
  • Everyone still believes Lee (Adina Porter) killed her ex-husband Mason.
  • Agnes Mary Winstead (Kathy Bates), the actress who played The Butcher, was diagnosed with schizophrenia after the show went off the air. Following several unsettling incidents between her and the rest of the cast, she’s given a restraining order and told to keep off the set.
  • Monet Petusmae (Angela Bassett), the actress who played Lee, developed a drinking problem after the show.
  • Audrey Tindel (Sarah Paulson) and Rory Monahan (Evan Peters), who played Shelby and Edward respectively, fell in love and later married.

Here’s what else we learn during this episode: Everyone’s going to die. All except one.

P.S. Rory’s already down as of the end of this episode.
