Time Master Rip Hunter loses his wife and son to the immortal tyrant Vandal Savage in the year 2166. Savage shares a connection with Kendra and Carter as all three of them are immortal. They gained their immortality in ancient Egyptian when they are actually from. Kendra and Carter were lovers and Savage was jealous of that fact. He came to kill them when a Thanagarian meteor fell to the Earth. Kendra, a priestess, prayed to the god Horus to help them. He granted them immortality, but Savage accidentally got dragged into the mix. Savage has hunted the two throughout their many lives and each time he kills them, he gets more powerful. In one of the team’s first encounters with Savage, Carter is killed.

The team journeys to the 70s, 80s, 2046, the wild west, and many other time periods trying to defeat Savage. Unfortunately, their plans always goes awry as the team has a hard time working as a team. When they are able to work together, they are quite the formidable group. Another force of opposition are the other Time Masters. Rip stole the Waverider without permission so the Masters sent their top bounty hunter, Cronus, after them.

Things get even worse when our team’s younger selves are targeted. Rip then decides that they have to go to 2166 and take down Savage there. Kendra, the only one who can actually kill Savage, is about to end his life when she finds out that Carter is alive but has been brainwashed by Savage. The team instead captures the villain and will take him to the Time Masters. They work on a way to reverse the damage to Carter. When they reach the the home of the Masters, instead of imprisoning Savage, they release him, give him Kendra and Carter, and bid him continue with his plan. The team, with the exception of Sara and Leonard, are imprisoned. Sara and Leonard bust the others out of the prison and Rip tells them that they must destroy the Oculus, a device that the Masters are using to control all of time and their own lives. With that out of the equation, they will be free to take down Savage. Unfortunately, the only way to destroy it is with a manual release. Leonard sacrifices himself to destroy the Oculus.

The team learns that Savage intends to rewrite history and revert the world back to the time of the Egyptians. He will do this using his, Kendra’s, and Carter’s blood and three Thanagarian meteors that fell throughout time. When their blood meets the meteor surface, Savage will be mortal, but there is not a lot of time before time is erased. The team splits up and simultaneously take down Savage.

The world is saved, and the team is free to do as they wish. However, they don’t want to continue living in 2016 and decide to call Rip back. They say that now that the Time Masters have been wiped out, there is need of someone to police the timeline. Kendra and Carter tell them that they will not be joining the others as they are finally free to make their own choices in thousands of years.

The Legends are about to board the Waverider when another version of the ship crash-lands near them. A man they do not know exits the ship and tells them that if they leave, they will die. He was told to bring this warning to them by Mick and then introduces himself as Rex Tyler, a member of the Justice Society of America.

I was incredibly excited for this series and cannot wait to see what they bring in the second. Now that the show has figured out how it is going to work, I only expect it to get better. From the extended trailer that was released last week, I think that Legends will do just that.

Legends of Tomorrow returns Thursday, October 13, on The CW.
